As summer comes to an end, homeowners have the opportunity to take care of home repair projects before the shorter days and colder temperatures make some household work too difficult. This in-between season is a great time to prepare your home for winter while the weather is still tolerable. Below are some fall preventative home maintenance steps that every homeowner should follow.
Safety Detectors
Check smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and replace batteries as needed. The
U.S. Fire Administration
suggests testing alarms at least once a month by pushing the test button and replacing batteries once a year. Use this transition of seasons as a reminder.
Sealing
Be mindful of air leakage and the
most common spots
in the home for air sealing troubles. Reducing the amount of air that leaks in and out of your home is an easy way to cut heating and cooling costs, improve durability, increase comfort, and create a healthier indoor environment for the home. Before it gets too cold outside, change your screens out for storm windows and doors throughout the home. Also repair any loose windows or door frames.
Outdoor Maintenance
Outdoor maintenance is particularly important during the fall transitional months to prepare your yard for the upcoming cold weather. Use this time to clean gutters and downspouts and ensure water is draining outside properly. Remove any dead annuals, trim dead branches, and prune trees and shrubs before the unfriendly cold weather hits your greenery.
Heating and Cooling Systems
Now is
the perfect time
to clean, maintain, and replace HVAC filters before turning your heating system on for the winter. If necessary, contact a licensed heating contractor to service your gas heater or furnace to avoid malfunction or carbon monoxide poisoning.
Around the House
Take this transitional season as a reminder for those pesky household projects that you have been putting off for most of the year. Perform regular maintenance on natural stone countertops, inspect your dryer duct and wash lint filter, and run a clean cycle on dishwasher and washing machine. While you’re at it, don’t forget to deep clean your stove, oven, refrigerator, freezer, and/or microwave.
Some of these tasks may seem daunting or like something you would rather get some outside help with. If you are in need of a great local reference to get the job done,
our agents
are happy to recommend local vendors for your specific project and part of town.
